Evidence-based class

Matter of Balance: Help Reduce Risk of Falls: This will be held in person from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, Aug. 31-Sept. 23, at Trailside.

This outstanding evidence-based series of classes is proven to help reduce risk of falls. As we tend to lose balance, strength and flexibility and have vision changes as we age, our risk increases. The good news is we can do something about it! We will address fear of falling, learn to assess our home, how to get up safely if we do fall, and get practice with basic exercises that can help increase strength, flexibility and balance. If you need low-vision materials, please notify when registering.

Reserve your spot online or by calling 989-633-3700.

Space is extremely limited, so reserve a spot early for this potentially life-saving series. We are asking unvaccinated participants to please wear a mask. Please cancel your reservation if you or anyone in your household is sick.

Healthy Hints

Be In-the-Know About Milk and Plant-Based Alternatives: This will be held in person from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 5, in room 160 at Trailside.

Let’s clear up some of the confusion about dairy and plant-based beverages. Look at why people may choose a certain beverage. What about lactose intolerance and what is A2 milk? Compare nutritional values as well as pros and cons for many of the options available to you in the cooler at the local grocery store.

To reserve a seat, call 989-633-3700 or book online at www.SeniorServicesMidland.org at least one day before the presentation. We encourage you to come for lunch the day of the program.

Lunchtime Learners

Gambling Away the Golden Years: This will be held in person from noon to 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 6, in room 160 at Trailside.

Retirement brings with it all kinds of opportunities… and challenges. Work is done. The family’s grown. It’s your turn to “play.” You’ve got all the time in the world to relax and enjoy yourself – to read, take walks, fish, golf, play cards, travel, explore new hobbies, go to movies, attend concerts, even volunteer more at church and other organizations around town. For some, gambling can become a way to socialize and provide some entertainment. But, as with most forms of entertainment, it is possible to get too much of a good thing. When a gambler’s fun becomes an obsession, there’s no turning back. They have crossed the line… from entertainment to addiction. Gambling Away the Golden Years™ explores the possibility of gambling turning from entertainment to addiction during the golden years.

Presented by Angela Johnson and Michelle Beeck from The Legacy Center for Community Success. Michelle is their Community Educator, responsible for coordinating social, emotional and drug prevention programming within local school districts. Angela serves as Community Integration Leader responsible for collaborating with community coalitions and organizations to create a healthy community. Both have received Prevention Specialist certification from the Michigan Certification Board for Addiction Professionals.

Reserve your spot online or by calling 989-633-3700. Please cancel your reservation if you or anyone in your household is sick.
