Guest Column: Caregiver issues like depression, isolation, and burnout are becoming urgent – The Florida Times-Union

by SeniorCaringService

I want to thank Tom Coughlin for sharing his very personal journey as a caregiver for his wife, which was highlighted in a recent story written by TU columnist Gene Frenette. I really respect the fact that this very public person was brave to offer his intimate insights into caregiving so others might benefit.

It is interesting to note that in 2020 AARP reported that one in five in Americans were family caregivers; however, the COVID-19 pandemic has brought that number even higher. The day-to-day responsibilities caregivers face are not easy. Every day is filled with uncertainty, but they carry on putting the needs of their loved one above their own and often making countless sacrifices within their own personal and professional lives.

Caregivers often become the voice for those who can no longer speak, the legs for those who can no longer walk, and the eyes for those who can no longer see. Despite the challenges, many caregivers find a sense of purpose in caring for and bringing meaning to the lives of those for whom they care. The experience builds strength, resilience, and presents opportunities to build closer relationships with family and loved ones.

As chair of the Caregiver Coalition of Northeast Florida, I invite caregivers to tap into the virtual workshops, newsletter and information on the Coalition’s website. The Coalition is a partnership of leading health care, aging and senior services organizations in our region. Agencies such as ElderSource, AARP Florida, Baptist AgeWell Center for Senior Health, and many more come together to create a foundation of compassion and support for caregivers in our area.

The issues caregivers face such as depression, isolation, and caregiver burnout are becoming increasingly urgent. Building connections through access to resources and support is critical to the wellbeing of caregivers and those they care for.

If you are a caregiver, you are not alone. There is a whole caregiving community here in Northeast Florida who truly believe, as author Jim Rohn said it, “One person caring for another represents life’s greatest value.”
