FAIRFIELD — NorthBay Medical Center has been recognized as “High Performing” in maternity care by U.S. News & World Report.

This is the first time the publication has published a list of Best Hospitals for Maternity, according to information from NorthBay Healthcare.

To earn the recognition, hospitals had to excel on multiple metrics that matter to expectant families, including complication rates, C-sections, whether births were scheduled too early in pregnancy, and how successfully each hospital supported breastfeeding.

Of approximately 2,700 U.S. hospitals that provide maternity services, only 237 earned the “High Performing” rating. It is the highest rating U.S. News & World Report awards for maternity services.

“This rating is a testament to the quality care provided by our team,” said Katie Lydon, senior director of Periop Services, Wound Care and Ambulatory Surgery, in the release. “We want our patients to know that we are fully committed to providing a safe, positive experience for mothers, babies and families by employing best practices across the spectrum of maternity services.”

“We have an exceptional team of caregivers who help welcome hundreds of babies into the world each year, with high-risk pregnancy and neonatal intensive care services if needed,” said Wayne Gietz, president of NorthBay Healthcare Group, in the release. “We are extremely honored to be named one of the best maternity hospitals in the country.”

“This award confirms that our patients can have peace of mind that they are choosing a health care provider with a proven track record of providing both mother and child the most compassionate care and advanced medicine close to home,” said NorthBay President and CEO Konard Jones, in the release.

The award comes on the heels of another recent award for maternity care.

NorthBay Medical Center in October earned a spot on the California Health and Human Services and Cal Hospital Compare’s Maternity Honor Roll for achieving a statewide target aimed at reducing births via cesarean sections in first-time mothers with low-risk pregnancies.

The U.S. News & World Report honor also follows the magazine’s July Best Hospitals report that ranked NorthBay Medical Center as one of the top 50 best regional hospitals in California and rated it “high performing” in urology and six specific specialty procedures and conditions: diabetes, heart attack, heart failure, kidney failure, pneumonia and stroke.

“All families deserve to be informed on how hospitals perform on key indicators of quality, which is why U.S. News has compiled and published a trove of maternal health data from hospitals across the country,” said Ben Harder, managing editor and chief of health analysis at U.S. News & World Report, in the press release. “The hospitals we’ve recognized as High Performing meet a high standard in caring for patients with uncomplicated pregnancies.”

The Best Hospitals for Maternity evaluation looks at offerings for parents-to-be that include measures of safety, alongside services and amenities, like private rooms and availability of child birthing classes.

The evaluation looks at hospital data relating to only uncomplicated pregnancies, not high-risk pregnancies. Participating hospitals responded to a survey from the U.S. News & World Report health analysis team in the spring of 2021, which reflects data from 2019.
