Fall-proofing your home: Katy senior care experts share simple tips to help prevent falls – KPRC Click2Houston

by SeniorCaringService

Nearly three million people over the age of 65 go to the emergency room every year for fall injuries, and about one million of those occur at home, with 20% of cases resulting in serious injuries such as broken bones or head trauma, according to Seniors Helping Seniors, a company that hires active seniors to provide in-home senior care services for their less active counterparts.

June is National Home Safety Month. To bring awareness to fall safety for seniors, Marvin Mendez-Wright, owner of Seniors Helping Seniors in Katy, appeared on KPRC 2+ to provide tips on how to fall-proof a home.

Wright shared the importance of installing handrails on steps, what to do if seniors must carry something up the stairs, the importance of lighting in certain rooms such as the bathroom or doorways, items to avoid such as throw rugs, décor and clutter that someone could trip over, and investing in a medical alarm system especially if a senior lives alone.
